Building a Website on a Shoestring Budget

Tech Tutorial: Building a Website on a Shoestring Budget

Welcome to Building a Website on a Shoestring Budget. Each of you is going to build a website in 75 minutes. It will have content, images and video. It will show your latest Twitter posts, and people will be able to share your content on Facebook, Twitter or email with the click of a button. And if you want, it can even have a blog.

To start:

  1. Click here to download the files you’ll need for your new website.

  2. Unzip the files from shoestring_budget.zip to your desktop.

  3. Sign in to the server here: https://aam.pmcarlson.com/wp-login.php. (It will open in a new window. Close the window when you are signed in and return to this screen.)
    username: your first initial and last name (ex. pcarlson)
    password: zeva

  4. It will open in a new window. Close the window when you are signed in and return to this screen.

  5. Create your website here: https://aam.pmcarlson.com/wp-signup.php. (It will open in a new window.) Choose a site name (NO CAPITAL LETTERS, SPACES OR SPECIAL CHARACTERS). For the title for your website, use “Timothy the War-Hero Tortoise”. Under “Privacy”, choose “No” for search engines–otherwise you will find yourself ‘published’ before you’ve even added a post. When you’re ready, take the plunge and click “Create Site.”

  6. When you get to the confirmation screen, click on the link to your new site. Use the admin toolbar at the top of the screen to navigate to the dashboard.

From this point on, just follow me in class. We will be:

  • creating four pages with text, images and video;
  • crediting sources;
  • changing the look/theme of your website;
  • adding a twitter widget to the sidebar;
  • adding share functionality to each page;
  • and changing the navigation menu.
